Impact of education on nurses' perceptions of patient safety culture: A systematic review

Patient safety culture is crucial for providing safe, high-quality care. Educating nurses about patient safety is considered a significant intervention for improving their perceptions of patient safety culture. This systematic review aimed to identify the impact of educational interventions on nurses’ perceptions of patient safety culture. The current review followed the PRISMA 2020 reporting guidelines for new systematic reviews. The search focused on studies published in English from January 2019 to April 2025 in six databases: CINAHL via EBSCOhost, MEDLINE via EBSCOhost, Scopus via Elsevier, ProQuest, the Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials, and Web of Science. Two reviewers independently screened the studies using the Rayyan platform and evaluated the quality of the included studies using the Medical Education Research Study Quality Instrument. Seven studies met the inclusion criteria. All included studies were of moderate quality. Six studies used quasi-experimental designs, and one was a randomized controlled trial. Overall, the findings indicate that educational interventions positively influence nurses’ perceptions of patient safety culture. This review highlights the importance of educational interventions in strengthening patient safety culture. It emphasizes the need for well-structured and ongoing education to sustain improvements in patient safety culture.
